Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced the immediate termination of a temporary public policy that permitted visitors to apply for work permits from within Canada. Initially introduced in August 2020 as a response to COVID-19 pandemic-related travel restrictions, the policy enabled visitors in Canada to obtain work permits without leaving the country. Additionally, foreign nationals who had previously held a work permit and had changed their status to “visitor” were allowed to work legally while awaiting a decision on their new work permit application. Although this temporary policy was originally scheduled to expire on February 28, 2025, IRCC has decided to end it earlier to better manage the number of temporary residents in Canada and maintain the integrity of the immigration system. The decision also comes in light of concerns about misuse of the policy by individuals misleading foreign nationals into unauthorized work. IRCC will continue to process any applications submitted before August 28, 2024, under the now-concluded policy.
