On March 20, 2026, the Government of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced updates to the Super Visa program that will make it more flexible and accessible for families seeking reunification. These changes come into force on March 31, 2026. What Is the Super Visa? The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows extended stays in Canada, making it a pathway for family reunification without requiring permanent immigration. A key requirement of the program is that the host (the child or grandchild in Canada) must demonstrate sufficient income to support the visiting family member during their stay. What Is Changing? IRCC has introduced two modifications to how income eligibility is assessed. These changes are intended to provide greater flexibility for families who may not have met the requirements under the previous rules. 1. Expanded Income Assessment Period Previously, IRCC assessed a host’s financial eligibility based solely on income from the most recent taxation year. Under the new rules, applicants may now rely on income from either of the two most recent taxation years preceding the application. This gives families an additional opportunity to qualify, particularly where income may have fluctuated year over year. 2. Inclusion of Parent or Grandparent Income In another shift, IRCC will now allow the income of the visiting parent or grandparent to be included in the financial assessment. Where the host (and co-signer, if applicable) meets a minimum portion of the required income threshold, the visiting relative’s income can be used to bridge the gap. IRCC has not yet published what exactly will constitute the “minimum portion” of the sponsor’s income requirement. Currently, minimum annual income requirements are as follows: Updated July 29, 2025 Number of family membersMinimum income the host needs(in Canadian dollars)1$30,5262$38,0023$46,7204$56,7245$64,3366$72,5607$80,784If more than 7 people, for each additional family member, add$8,224 Who Do These Changes Apply To? The updated rules will apply to: All Super Visa applications submitted on or after March 31, 2026; and Applications already in process as of that date This means the changes will apply retrospectively, As soon as we learn what percentage of income can be covered off by the applicant, we will let you know. If you are considering applying for a Super Visa or reassessing a previously ineligible case, this policy change may open new opportunities. Back to all posts Share this post:
