The Cap on Grandparent and Parental Sponsorship Applications has Doubled, from 5,000 to 10,000 Per Year

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has announced that they have increased the amount of new parent and grandparent applications that will be accepted. The quantity of applications that will be retained for processing by IRCC has now climbed to 10,000 from the previous cap of 5,000 per year. The annual limit of 5,000 new applications had been in place since the program resumed in 2014 after being on put on hiatus since 2011. The new application limit of has already been reached for 2016. Although the intake of applications has doubled, it took only 3 days from when the program opened for 2016, January 4th, to when IRCC issued an official notice stating that they have received more than 10,000 applications and are closing the program for the year. The program will reopen on January 3, 2017 and will again accept 10,000 new applications. Although the number of applications accepted for sponsoring parents and grandparents has increased, there has not yet been anything done to accelerate the processing of these applications. IRCC indicates that they are working on applications received in 2011. This means that they must first address those received in 2014 and 2015 before being able to fully move onto the newly submitted applications.

Devika and John were excellent. They understood how this process would change my life and helped me get to the US. John was extremely kind and thorough. When my employer in the US ended up trying to take advantage of me, they helped me transfer my visa to a new employer and had so much empathy for my situation and now I have a job in California that makes me so happy while helping others. I am beyond grateful for their kindness and service. I will be using them for any changes to my status going forward.

The team at Borders - specifically Devika and Jenny - were an extraordinary support in navigating the Permanent Residency process. They were responsive and easily available, and incredibly detailed and thorough in their work. I strongly recommend them for anyone navigating the immigration process, and feel so grateful for their expertise and kindness that made a tricky process feel smooth.

Everyone in this office was incredibly supportive and helpful. In a situation that could have been very stressful, they took care of EVERYTHING. Thanks Jenny and Devika for providing exceptional service. Dealt with them for the second case, they kept me in loop for the whole process. Highly recommend using them again which in hindsight I will not have to but if you ever need legal help, they are definitely the people to go to!

I had a very good experience with Borders Law Firm. Though my PR file was a bit complicated, Brendan, Andres and Devika worked extremely well in a thorough and perfect manner. I was so happy when my PR application was processed in a record-breaking 45 days, thanks to the meticulous handling of my case by the lawyers.
