Introduction Canada has introduced new immigration measures that aim to facilitate the reunification of loved ones while simultaneously addressing labor shortages within the country. These new measures include: 1. Specialized processing tools to encourage faster processing times for spousal temporary resident visa applicants; 2. Open work permits for spousal and family class applicants; and 3. Extensions for eligible groups of open work permit holders whose Canadian open work permits expire between August 1 and the end of 2023. 1. Faster Processing Times for Spousal TRV Applicants Canada announced faster TRV processing for spousal applicants through the use of newspecialized tools to help ensure that most applications complete processing within 30 days. This new measure will help ensure that families can benefit by being together sooner while they awaitthe finalization of their permanent residence applications. 2. Enhanced Opportunities for Families: Open Work Permits The new measures offer enhanced opportunities for families by granting eligible spouses, partners, and dependents the ability to work in Canada while their permanent residence applications are being processed. Once a complete PR application is submitted under the specified family class programs, these individuals can apply for an open work permit under the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class (SPCLC) or other family class programs. By providing an open work permit at the initial stage of the application process, Canada seeks to facilitate the integration and support of spouses, partners, and dependents within the Canadian workforce. 3. Enhanced Opportunities for Families: Extension of Existing Open Work Permits Canada also introduced a new open work permit initiative that allows both spousal applicants and other open work permit holders to apply for an additional 18-month extension. Please be advised that Canada announced a similar extension for Post Graduate Work Permits on March 17, 2023. Conclusion The implementation of these new immigration measures signifies Canada’s dedication to striking a balance between family unity and economic growth. Through these initiatives, Canada is taking proactive steps to strengthen its society and enhance its labor market while upholding its core values of compassion and inclusivity. ravinder kaur I and my family want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to Devika, John and the team at Borders Law firm for assisting us with the PRTD application at a time when most processing was closed due to lockdowns. They also worked proactively with us to establish a good strategy with back up plans which gave us sufficient information and assurance. Very responsive and forthcoming with information. Proactive in processing but at the same time they put enough time in the application and the supporting details to have high quality of the application. As a result our application was processed in 1 go at a time when it was critical and sensitive time for the family. Thank you again.
